How does GDAX 8949 generate transactions?

It's a 3 step process:

  1. Access Data: provide a view-only API key and the link to your GDAX accounts report ( https://gdax-reports.s3.amazonaws.com/XXXXX/account.csv ) that our service can use.

  2. Validate Data:  SEE SAMPLE  if the data checks out and all buy/sell transaction sets match exactly in size, you'll then see a simplified view of your matching buy/sell sets, dates, and BTC/ETH/LTC sizes. Only on SUCCESS will you have the ability to purchase and generate a complete 8949 CSV file derived from your order and fill trade data stored on the GDAX server. Validating your data is always a FREE process.

  3. Generate 8949:  SEE SAMPLE  a link to your complete 8949 CSV file will be provided, along with a custom detailed report that combines order and fill data and a cross-reference Set ID to match trades listed in your 8949 (invaluable!). What's more, your tax preparer WILL LOVE YOU for giving him something he can use with his tax preparation software.

* Please read the limitations and requirements. This service is designed specifically for short-term traders.

Can't I just do Bitcoin capital gain/loss calculations myself?

Yes and no. If you made more than a dozen Bitcoin, Ethereum, or Litecoin trades, probably not. Each BUY and SELL order can have more than one order id and each order id can have dozens of related fills with different prices, sizes, and associated trading fees, thus making it a headache for FIFO accounting and trying to figure out your cost basis manually. What's more, it's not easy to determine which BUY orders belong to which SELL orders by glancing over the "account.csv" or "fills.csv" reports GDAX provides. Only an intelligent computer script can parse and connect the data efficiently.

Cost basis
In regard to cost basis, we add your buy fill fees to the purchase total and subtract your sell fill fees from the sale total to determine your final gain/loss for each short-term, capital asset transaction (info). We also round off cents (down for<50¢, up for>49¢) to whole dollars for transaction totals as instructed in Form 8949.
